Flyby to Remember Captain Michael VandenBos

For any new residents to the Town of Whitby, the first day of school will have new meaning. On this day, the Canadian Forces aerobatics team ‘The Snowbirds’ honour one of their own.

Captain Michael VandenBos was only 28 years old when his tutor jet crashed and burned while practicing a manoeuvre just outside Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, December 10th, 1998.

Michael was a resident of Whitby and in 2001 he became namesake of the DDSB school Captain Michael VandenBos located in Williamsburg community. Since the opening of this school, the skies above Whitby have echoed with the sounds of jets each first day of school.

I was lucky to have the show taking place right over my house. What an amazing spectacle that was!

You could smell the jet fuel.

Enjoy the show
