There are three things I never seem to have enough of: time, money and usable space!
In my experience, part of the problem is the open style design concepts of today's homes. It can make it difficult to delineate rooms and maximize every square foot. In my own home for example the family room, kitchen and eating area make up the majority of the main floor.
While there is enough room to have a traditional table and chairs set up in our eating area, it takes up more room than I want and doesn't add anything in way of additional storage.
To better use the space, we decided to have a banquette built in with storage drawers beneath. It's allowed us to store things we don't need to access frequently leaving our kitchen cupboards free for items we use on a more regular basis.
Since we have younger kids who have a tendency to still be a bit messy at mealtimes, we opted against having a custom cushion made for the top rather I've used easy to wash throw pillows to add some warmth and create and inviting place sit. The material of the bench itself is durable and scratch resistant. A quick wipe with a cloth after meals is enough to remove sticky, greasy handprints.
In addition to being stylish and kid friendly, building a banquette in our kitchen has allowed us to better use space that would have otherwise been wasted. In a small home that's a big selling point.
Have you put a bench or banquet in your home? If so we'd love to see it. Post it to Instagram and tag us @property_matchmakers!
